Areas of application
These magnets combine the advantages of permanent magnets with the flexibility of an electromagnet. They are used in numerous applications where reliable holding force is required without a continuous power supply, but where simple control to release the load is desired.
The way they work is based on the principle of magnetic flux control:
In its normal state, the permanent magnet generates a constant magnetic field that securely attracts metallic loads. A coil is wound around this permanent magnet, which also generates a magnetic field when a current flows through it. This opposing field reduces or neutralizes the magnetic field of the permanent magnet, causing the holding force to disappear or be greatly weakened. As a result, the load that was previously magnetically lifted is released.
This principle makes electromagnets particularly energy-efficient and safe, as they maintain their holding force even in the event of a power failure and the load does not accidentally fall. The following applications benefit from these properties:
- Material handling: In metal processing, mechanical engineering and warehouses, electromagnets are used to safely lift and transport metal plates and other ferrous workpieces and to set them down with a short current pulse. They are often used in lifting devices with increased safety requirements.
- Assembly and mechanical engineering: In production and assembly lines, these magnets help to securely hold workpieces without the need for mechanical clamping devices.
