Samarium Cobalt Magnets
Just like neodymium magnets, samarium cobalt (SmCo) magnets are rare earth magnets. They are characterised by their high temperature resistance and strong holding power. Our SmCo magnets can withstand temperatures from -250 to +250°C. Of the magnetic materials NdFeB, ferrite and AlNiCo, samarium cobalt magnets have the second-highest holding force for the same dimensions.
In our magnet shop, you will find these strong high-temperature magnets as disc or block magnets. We can also produce other shapes for you on request.

SmCo magnets and their properties
SmCo magnets combine high resistance to cold and heat with a strong holding force. When compared to other magnetic materials, the following quickly becomes apparent:
Magnets with strong holding force, such as neodymium, are not very resistant to temperatures. Neodymium permanently loses its magnetic force above 80°C. With special coatings, this figure can be increased to 150°C.
A temperature-resistant magnet like AlNiCo can withstand heat up to 450°C. However, its holding force is considerably lower than that of neodymium. The same applies to ferrite, which can be used up to 200°C.
It can therefore be said that SmCo magnets combine the best of both worlds. Strong holding power combined with high temperature resistance. In addition, they are corrosion-resistant and difficult to demagnetise using external magnetic fields. However, they are not resistant to inorganic acids and alkalis.
SmCo magnets are made by sintering, which makes them hard and brittle. They are sensitive to impact and strong force effects can cause the magnet to chip and splinter.
Applications for samarium cobalt magnets
Samarium cobalt magnets were first developed in the USA in 1966. Until the discovery of neodymium magnets in the 1980s, these high-temperature magnets were the magnetic material with the highest magnetic energy density. Their properties make them useful for a range of applications. They are used wherever strong holding forces are needed at high ambient temperatures:
- in generators
- in engines
- in sensor technology for a range of measuring devices
