Neodymium pot magnets
These strong neodymium magnets are given their characteristic name “pot magnets” because of the way they are constructed. The raw magnet is placed in a larger steel cup and the edges are filled with a plastic ring or epoxy. You can therefore imagine the steel casing as a pot sitting on the magnet.
Neodymium pot magnets offer a number of advantages: They are extremely strong, robust and the magnetism is shielded from the outside. The pot magnet has its holding force exclusively on the free adhesive surface. Installation is usually done by gluing or pressing.

Pot magnets and raw magnets: What's the difference?
A neodymium pot magnet is nothing more than a raw magnet that is built into a steel cup. These flat permanent magnets are more expensive than a standard raw magnet. It is therefore worth asking whether neodymium pot magnets or raw magnets are better suited for the intended purpose.
The obvious difference between these two magnets lies in the steel casing of the pot magnet (these magnet systems are also called flat grippers). This steel casing has two effects: it guides the magnetic field lines of the magnet to the open holding surface, thus increasing its adhesive force. At the same time, the magnet is shielded and protected from external influences.
The holding force of neodymium pot magnets is higher than that of normal neodymium magnets. This is due to the bundling of the field lines. However, this bundling also makes the magnetic field shallower. Simply put, this means that the pot magnet must be in direct contact with the holding surface in order to develop its full magnetic force.
Even a small air gap of 1 mm can significantly weaken the holding force of neodymium pot magnets.
Conversely, raw magnets have a free magnetic field. Although this is not bundled and the adhesive force is therefore weaker, they are somewhat less sensitive to an air gap.
Neodymium pot magnets and their advantages:
These flat grippers are particularly useful when the magnet does not have to overcome an air gap. Please note: An air gap is not only created by the spatial distance between the magnet and the object. It can also be created by paintwork, rust or unevenness on the holding surface.

In summary, neodymium pot magnets offer the following advantages:
- Extremely high holding force on the free adhesive surface.
- Magnetism to the outside is shielded by the steel cup.
- Raw magnets are brittle and can splinter quickly – the pot magnet is protected by its design and is much more robust.
- The stability of neodymium pot magnets makes installation easier.
