The magnetic field of a rod magnet
A rod magnet is usually axially magnetized. This means that it has its north and south pole on the circular outer surfaces. When we speak of a magnetic field of a rod magnet, we mean the magnetic effect around the space of the magnet. This is caused by the field lines.
Field lines always follow the same rule: they run from the north pole to the south pole and do not intersect. In the case of a rod magnet, this means that the field lines run laterally from the north pole to the south pole. Due to its cylindrical shape, the rod magnet is well suited to illustrate the principle of the magnetic field. That is why neodymium rod magnets are often used in schools to visually demonstrate the course of the field lines.
The higher the density of the field lines, the stronger the magnetic field of the rod magnet. This means that the rod magnet achieves its strongest adhesive force directly at the circular adhesive surfaces. Here, the density of the field lines is highest and lowest in the middle of the magnet.
