Areas of application

Electromagnets form their magnetic field after the application of a current and are not magnetic without current. As we learn in school, when a current flows through a magnetic conductor, a weak magnetic field forms around it.
The modern electromagnet consists of a coil (the magnetic conductor) that is wound around a ferromagnetic material to intensify the magnetic field that is created. The coil is installed in a steel pot and enclosed in a sealing compound. The protective steel pot is also magnetically conductive and guides the field lines of the magnetic field to the free holding surface.

Electromagnets are indispensable in today's industry. The ability to generate a strong magnetic field at the push of a button is used in a variety of industries: 

  • Material handling: Electromagnets are indispensable tools for industrial material handling because they can effortlessly lift and transport ferromagnetic loads such as steel plates or metal beams. They are often mounted on cranes or lifting devices to efficiently organize the flow of materials in warehouses, production plants or port facilities. The ability to precisely switch the magnetic field on and off allows loads to be held securely and positioned accurately. 
  • Assembly and manufacturing: In assembly and manufacturing processes, electromagnets are often used to fix or move workpieces during processing. They provide a stable hold without damaging the workpiece, particularly in metalworking processes such as welding, drilling or milling. Electromagnets are also useful in the production of complex assemblies, as they can precisely position different metal parts next to each other. 
  • Automation technology: Electromagnets are installed in robotic systems and automated conveyor systems to grip, move and place metallic components in a targeted manner. They offer the advantage of flexible integration into existing systems and help to standardize workflows and make production lines more efficient.
